Cystic Fibrosis
People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) have unique dietary demands. People with CF need
more calories than others in their respective age group. CF causes the body to make a
thick mucus which not only blocks the lungs and other ducts and passageways, it also
prevents the intestines from absorbing essential nutrients for healthy growth and
quality of life.
Those with CF need extra nutrients such as Protein, Iron, Salt, Zinc, and Calcium, they
also need extra calories. The good news is foods such as whole milk, butter, burgers,
bacon, cheese, avocados, ice cream, cheesecake, and whip cream are often encouraged.
Snacking with trail mixes, nuts, and peanut butter crackers is also encouraged. It is
highly encouraged that people with CF include a qualified dietitian on their care team.
Nutri-Heal provides that service. Nutritional Healing consists of registered dietitians,
nutritional pharmacist, and a diverse group of healthcare experts that provide
nutritional intervention to patients with CF. There is a need for improved nutritional
intervention in the outpatient health care setting and we have committed to improving
not only healing times but quality of life of those patients. We offer a unique service that
will provide nutritional screening, education, assessment, recommendation, monitoring,
and documentation to the outpatient CF healthcare patients.
